Experience economic vulnerability and negative prejudice

Song Doo-hwan, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, emphasized on the 13th, marking the "Day of North Korean Defectors," that “it is necessary to recognize them as ordinary members of our society and as neighbors living together.”

In a statement released that day, Chairperson Song said, “Economic situations can be overcome through efforts by the government, local authorities, and the individuals themselves, but a sense of belonging and self-esteem as members of the community can only be realized when there is mutual respect and empathy among members.”

As of the end of March this year, the number of North Korean defectors who have entered the country stands at 34,121. According to last year’s “Survey on the Human Rights Situation of North Korean Defector Households in Crisis,” only 34% of respondents answered that they have someone to ask for help during times of mental stress. These individuals are analyzed to be in very vulnerable economic conditions and face negative prejudices, placing them in difficult situations.

Chairperson Song stated, “I hope our society will advance into a more mature society characterized by inclusion and consideration rather than discrimination and prejudice,” and added, “We will continue to make efforts so that North Korean defectors can settle stably as ordinary members of our society and enjoy their own lives.”
