Police Conduct Search and Seizure of Democratic Party City Council Member
Evidence of Money Exchange Detected During Speaker Election Process
The Yongin City Council in Gyeonggi Province was thrown into turmoil. Last month, allegations arose that a council member running for the Democratic Party chairmanship had handed out money and gifts to fellow council members.
According to the Yongin City Council and Yongin Western Police Station on the 10th, the police conducted a search and seizure of the offices and homes of Democratic Party members A and B of the Yongin City Council on the same day.
A police official stated, "It is true that a search and seizure was conducted on the council members," adding, "Since the investigation is ongoing, it is difficult to provide further details."
According to the police, the investigation began following a report from Democratic Party member C, who informed the police that they had received money and gifts from member B. It is known that member B handed over the gifts while requesting support for member A, who was running in the party's internal primary to select the chairperson of the city council. The gifts were reportedly luxury handbags, and member C is understood to have immediately returned the gifts to member B.
Voices expressing concern about the situation escalating are emerging both inside and outside the city council. There is speculation that multiple Democratic Party members may have received luxury bags during the primary process. Currently, the council members named in the search and seizure and their offices are not responding to contact attempts.
