The Bioethics Committee of Dongseo University (President Jang Jeguk), chaired by Professor Choi Hyunhee, recently obtained evaluation and certification for its Institutional Review Board (IRB) from the Institutional Committee of the National Bioethics Policy Institute, a public institution under the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
The evaluation and certification of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) is conducted by the National Bioethics Policy Institute in accordance with Article 14 of the "Bioethics and Safety Act" and Article 10 of its enforcement decree. The composition and operational performance of the IRB are evaluated, and final certification is granted by the Minister of Health and Welfare. The certification is valid for three years.
The committee received final certification after passing both document and on-site evaluations based on 10 criteria regarding the "independence and support of the committee" and 30 criteria regarding the "composition, operation, and function of the committee" (a total of 40 criteria).
The Dongseo University Bioethics Committee was established in September 2013 and achieved this certification after undergoing a preliminary evaluation in 2020.
Of the 242 institutions evaluated since 2021, a total of 125 have been certified by the Minister of Health and Welfare. By type, this includes 83 medical institutions, 38 universities, and 4 research institutions.
Certified institutions may be entrusted with the duties of other institutional committees in the future. Additionally, when applying as the lead research institution for new projects in the selection of health and medical technology R&D projects, institutions with committee certification receive additional points.
