Roles of the State and Local Governments
Participation of Experts and Local Stakeholders
Pohang City will hold a population policy symposium on the theme of "Population Crisis: The Roles of the Nation and Local Governments" at 2 p.m. on July 11 at Change Up Ground to mark Population Day.
This is the second time the symposium is being held, following last year. The event aims to explore population policy directions tailored to the region, such as expanding quality jobs and improving settlement conditions related to Pohang's population policy, through expert presentations and discussions among citizens from various sectors.
In the first part, Dr. Lee Sangrim (Senior Researcher, Population Policy Research Center, Seoul National University) will present on "Population Change and Pohang's Response," and Dr. Shin Youngmi (Senior Researcher, Population Policy Research Center, Seoul National University) will speak on "Can Families and Youth Dream of a Future in Pohang?"
In the second part, the presenters and panelists will engage in a comprehensive discussion on overcoming the low birth rate to address the crisis of local extinction and on Pohang-specific strategies to prevent the outflow of young people to the Seoul metropolitan area.
A Pohang City official stated, "As the issues of low birth rate and aging population have become the most critical national agenda in Korea, and the government is establishing the Population Strategy Planning Department as a control tower for low birth rate, it is especially meaningful to have a venue in Pohang to discuss population policy," adding, "We hope for active participation and support in this forum for public discussion on population issues."
