2024 Academic Year Early Admission Quota 1,658, Additional Admitted Students 1,670
In the 2024 academic year early admission for universities, additional admissions due to registration withdrawals occurred at 38 out of 39 medical schools nationwide, excluding Seoul National University. It appears that most of these withdrawals were caused by students giving up registration after being admitted to multiple medical schools.
This year, the number of medical school admission quotas doubled, leading to expectations of a significant increase in students admitted to multiple schools. As the number of registration withdrawals rises, the number of early admission transfers is also expected to increase, which may result in changes to the admission cutoff scores.
According to Jongro Academy on the 7th, the early admission quota for 39 medical schools nationwide (excluding the Graduate School of Medicine at CHA University) for the 2024 academic year was 1,658, while the number of additional admissions was 1,670. This corresponds to 100.7% of the early admission quota.
Additional admissions occur when students admitted to multiple universities withdraw from some. In medical schools, it is estimated that most additional admissions happened as students admitted to multiple medical schools moved between them. Applicants can apply up to six times in early admissions.
By university, Sungkyunkwan University had the highest scale of additional admissions, with 77 additional admits for 25 available spots, amounting to 308.0% relative to the admission quota. This was followed by Catholic Kwandong University (296.2% relative to quota), Chungbuk National University (226.3%), Chosun University (213.6%), Eulji University (204.2%), and Dongguk University branch campus (191.7%). On the other hand, major medical schools such as Yonsei University (40.0%), Ulsan University (41.4%), and Catholic University (71.4%) had smaller scales of additional admissions. Seoul National University was the only school with no additional admissions, as all initially admitted students registered.

By region, the Gyeongin area had the highest rate of additional admissions relative to the admission quota at 129.5%, followed by Gangwon (128.1%), Chungcheong (117.0%), Daegu-Gyeongbuk (109.8%), Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam (101.5%), Honam (86.7%), Seoul (80.0%), and Jeju (80.0%).
In the 2025 university entrance exam, the number of early admission quotas for medical schools is expected to increase from 1,872 to 3,010, a rise of 1,138 (60.8%), which may lead to registration withdrawals due to multiple admissions exceeding 3,000 students. The number of 'transfer students' who move from early to regular admissions due to failure to select students in early admissions is also expected to increase.
Im Seong-ho, CEO of Jongro Academy, stated, "In the 2025 entrance exam, the increase in early admission additional admits due to the expansion of medical school quotas and the increase in regular admission transfers may cause significant changes in the admission cutoff scores for medical schools in both early and regular admissions. However, the key variable is how much the number of applicants increases with the expansion of medical school quotas."
