Victim Compared to 'Tomato Juice'
Police Conduct Initial Investigation of Man in His 20s
A man in his 20s who left insulting remarks about the victims at the memorial site set up at the scene of the wrong-way traffic accident at Seoul City Hall Station has turned himself in to the police.
The Seoul Namdaemun Police Station announced on the 5th that they have booked a man in his 20s, Mr. A, for defamation of the deceased after he posted insulting comments about the victims of the wrong-way traffic accident at City Hall Station, and are conducting a police investigation.
Mr. A is suspected of leaving a post at the memorial site around 6 p.m. on the 3rd, comparing the victims of the tragedy to "tomato juice." The post contained the phrase, "Rest in peace to those who have become tomato juice."
On the following day, the 4th, Mr. A expressed his intention to surrender to the police, who then conducted an initial investigation into his motives and the circumstances of the crime. A police official stated, "We plan to continue investigating the detailed motives and the process of the crime."
In addition, the police have begun preliminary investigations into three other posts insulting the victims that were posted on online communities after the accident.
A police official said, "The police intend to actively take legal action against acts such as spreading false information and defamation against the victims."
