Samsung SDI will supply energy storage system (ESS) batteries worth about 1 trillion KRW to NextEra Energy, the largest power company in the United States.

According to industry sources on the 4th, Samsung SDI is reportedly in the final stages of a contract to supply NextEra Energy with batteries totaling 6.3 GWh (gigawatt-hours) in capacity. The supply volume corresponds to 11.5% of last year's total ESS capacity in North America (55 GWh), with the contract value estimated at around 1 trillion KRW.

The main product supplied to NextEra Energy is the "Samsung Battery Box (SBB)." This product was also unveiled last month at "InterBattery Europe 2024" held in Germany.

The SBB is an ESS product installed in a 20-foot container box, containing high-nickel NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum) battery cells, modules, and racks. It is characterized by its efficient use of internal space, allowing for a larger quantity of batteries to be loaded.

The energy density per container unit has improved by approximately 37% compared to existing products, and the heat propagation blocking effect of the previously applied direct injection system has been significantly enhanced with the module-integrated direct injection (EDI) technology, strengthening fire prevention and containment functions.

This supply is expected to raise Samsung SDI's presence in the global ESS battery market, currently dominated by China. In particular, as countries increase the installation of solar power facilities to address power shortages, demand for ESS batteries is also expected to surge.

According to industry sources, the U.S. ESS market is projected to expand from $7.9 billion (approximately 10.9 trillion KRW) this year to $18.7 billion (approximately 25.8 trillion KRW) by 2030.

A Samsung SDI official stated regarding this order, "We cannot confirm details related to the customer."
