- Operation of experience booths including 3D asset data utilization education and interaction VR in the traditional culture field
- Active encouragement of component-type data utilization to establish a traditional culture data industry ecosystem base
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Yoo In-chon, hereinafter referred to as MCST) and the Korea Culture Information Service Agency (President Jung Woon-hyun, hereinafter referred to as KCISA) announced that they successfully operated the Korean Traditional Culture Content Pavilion at the ‘2024 Metaverse Expo’ held from June 26 to 28.
As a specialized institution for digital transformation, KCISA has been building 3D asset data in the traditional culture field usable in virtual convergence environments since 2022, and has been providing the data free of charge through both public and private platforms.
At this year’s expo, participating for the third consecutive year, the experience booth allowed visitors to better understand various contents using the data through a ‘360° Interaction VR Experience’ utilizing the ‘Suwon Hwaseong Haenggung’ 3D asset data built last year and an ‘MR Game’ using motion data from ‘Muye 24gi’.
Additionally, a special lecture titled ‘The Future of Content Changed by Real-Time’ was held to highlight the value of traditional culture 3D asset data and to explore the future of content in the traditional culture field, which attracted great popularity.
As the cumulative number of downloads has exceeded one million since the data was opened, indicating expanded utilization, the expo actively promoted the use of modular data to foster and revitalize the 3D data industrial ecosystem in the traditional culture sector. By using modular data that can be assembled like LEGO, the creation of secondary works and commercial use were encouraged, and a separate consultation booth was operated to share opinions with visitors and user companies and provide customized consulting.
President Jung Woon-hyun of KCISA said, “This expo was an opportunity to communicate directly with visitors and confirm firsthand that the traditional culture data opened so far has been very helpful to creators. We hope that traditional culture data will continue to be utilized in various fields.” He added, “Looking ahead, we will make further efforts to ensure that Korean traditional culture data can be used in more diverse fields, including securing traditional culture data usable in the AI sector in preparation for the future of culture and arts brought by AI.”
The ‘Metaverse Data in the Traditional Culture Field’ is freely available to anyone through the MCST Metaverse Data Lab as well as 3D production tools such as Unreal Marketplace and Unity Asset Store, allowing commercial use and creation of secondary works without copyright concerns.
