The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency has launched a special crackdown on drunk driving for two months, from this month until August 21.
The provincial police agency announced that, as the number of vehicles visiting vacation spots increases during the summer holiday season, special crackdowns on drunk driving will be conducted not only at resorts and tourist attractions but also around entertainment districts and restaurant areas where drinking gatherings are frequent.
All police stations in the province will conduct simultaneous crackdowns at least twice a week, and on Fridays, all available personnel including the provincial police mobile crackdown team, the riot police, and local police station traffic teams will be mobilized for joint operations.
The joint crackdowns will focus on major roads, areas with frequent 112 reports of suspected drunk driving, beaches, valleys, and other locations where large crowds gather.
According to the provincial police agency, a total of 2,971 reports of suspected drunk driving were received from January 1 to June 23 this year.
An average of 16.9 reports were received per day, of which 472 cases were actually caught, resulting in an average of 2.7 cases detected per day.
An official from the provincial police agency said, "During the summer vacation season, if you have had even one drink, you should never drive," and added, "If you see a vehicle suspected of drunk driving, please report it immediately to 112."
