Gyeongbuk Office of Education Develops 'School Autonomous Time Design Chatbot' for 3rd and 4th Grade Elementary Students

Gyeongbuk Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Jong-sik) announced on the 4th that it has developed and will distribute to schools the nation’s first “School Autonomous Time Design Chatbot,” which utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) technology to design autonomous time for elementary school 3rd and 4th graders starting from the 2025 academic year, as part of its guidance on operating school autonomous time.

The School Autonomous Time Design Chatbot is drawing attention as an innovative system that dramatically increases the efficiency of operating autonomous time under the 2022 revised curriculum, while significantly reducing teachers' workloads.

By entering only minimal information such as subject (activity) name, subject group, target grade, semester, number of hours, and a brief description, the chatbot automatically designs the curriculum for school autonomous time. It considers the characteristics and levels of each grade, and provides tailored plans for objectives, lesson-by-lesson schedules, evaluation plans, and various educational activities.

In particular, the development of this system is the first of its kind nationwide, demonstrating that the Gyeongbuk Office of Education is responding swiftly to changes in the future educational environment and leading educational administration in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Additionally, the introduction of the chatbot, which assists in generating systematic and detailed subject (activity) designs at the level of curriculum experts, is expected to play a significant role in enhancing teachers’ digital capabilities and ensuring the stable implementation of school autonomous time through systematic curriculum design.

The Gyeongbuk Office of Education has previously launched “Onmusil.net,” a cyber teachers’ office where teachers can reduce their workload using digital technology and share information, cases, and support focused on teaching and learning through collaboration and sharing.

The School Autonomous Time Design Chatbot, developed based on the state-of-the-art AI language model Gemini, is also made available to teachers for easy application through Onmusil (onmusil.net)_G-AI LAB.
