The Presidential Office stated on the 2nd that the number of signatures on the national petition urging the initiation of an impeachment motion against President Yoon Seok-yeol has exceeded 900,000, adding that "impeachment is not possible unless there is a clear illegal act."
A Presidential Office official said in a meeting with reporters at the Yongsan Presidential Office in the afternoon, "We need to observe the situation in the National Assembly," expressing this position.
As of 1 p.m. that day, the petition titled "Please immediately initiate an impeachment motion against President Yoon" posted on the National Assembly's public petition board had garnered over 910,000 supporters within 12 days since it was first posted on the 20th of last month. Due to a significant increase in visitors, the website is currently experiencing access delays.
The petition surpassed the requirement of 50,000 signatures within 30 days to be referred to the relevant standing committee and was referred to the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee on the 24th of last month. The Democratic Party has stated that it will handle the matter according to relevant laws in the Judiciary Committee's petition review subcommittee.
The official added, "Politically, the continuous mention of impeachment seems to have created a situation where government affairs cannot proceed smoothly," and said, "We are closely monitoring this situation and will continue to observe the National Assembly's developments."
