Coast Guard Headquarters Expands Promotion Rate for Sergeants to 40→50%... Reduces Term for Special Public Officials by 1 Year

The Korea Coast Guard has decided to expand the number of personnel promoted from Lieutenant to Captain based on length of service and to shorten the required service period for the selection of equivalent public officials below the rank of Captain.

According to the Coast Guard on the 2nd, previously, length-of-service promotions to Captain were possible twice a year for about 40% of candidates who had served as Lieutenants for more than 8 years. Going forward, this will be expanded to 50%, and the limit on the number of times will be abolished.

Also, for ranks below Captain, personnel had to serve for more than 5 years to be listed as candidates for equivalent public official selection, but this period has been shortened by one year to 4 years. The equivalent public official system provides treatment corresponding to a higher rank to public officials who have served a certain period at their current rank but whose promotion has been delayed.

The amendment to the "Regulations on the Appointment of Police Officers Affiliated with the Korea Coast Guard," which includes these changes, was promulgated and enforced on the 27th of last month. This amendment was made as a follow-up measure to the government's "Measures to Create Conditions for Concentration of Public Officials' Work" announced in March.

The Coast Guard expects that about 1,600 employees will be promoted early or selected as equivalent public officials this month as a result of this measure.

Kim Jong-wook, Commissioner of the Korea Coast Guard, said, "We will continue to improve the personnel system so that employees can focus on their duties in the field and receive appropriate compensation."
