On the 26th, North Korea claimed a "successful multiple warhead test," but evidence of a ballistic missile launch failure was detected.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, our military has been monitoring signs of North Korea's missile launch preparations 24 hours a day. The missile launched this time was detected by ballistic missile surveillance radar and ground surveillance assets. In footage captured by thermal observation devices (TOD) operated by forward units, the missile body was seen rotating abnormally from the ascent phase and eventually exploding in midair.
Our military stated, "Abnormal flight patterns were identified from the ascent phase, and it is presumed that this flight instability caused the missile to explode." Regarding North Korea's claim that the test involved a 'Multiple Independently targetable Reentry Vehicle' (MIRV), the Republic of Korea and the United States assessed it as "an exaggeration to cover up the failure."
The footage released by the military clearly showed a winding trajectory from the early flight stage. All ballistic missiles that fly normally must follow a straight trajectory, but North Korea's missile did not. The missile exhibited rolling motions, swaying left and right, and shortly after lost its center completely, tumbling in a spinning motion.
Subsequently, instead of a normal propulsion flame, an abnormal fire appeared, and soon the missile exploded, breaking into dozens of fragments. If the missile test had indeed been a MIRV test as North Korea claimed, with three warheads separating normally according to the scenario, three clean straight trajectories should have been visible.
Regarding North Korea's false claims, the Republic of Korea and the United States evaluated them as "exaggerations to cover up the failure." Some missile fragments fell inland, possibly causing damage to residents, and it is believed that North Korean authorities may have made the 'multiple warhead test' claim to suppress public dissatisfaction.
The military added, "As North Korea is expected to attempt a re-launch of the failed missile, we are closely monitoring subsequent developments."
