"Bereaved Families' Joint Response... Efforts to Uncover the Truth of the Incident"

The bereaved families of the victims of the Arisel fire accident that occurred in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, are forming a council for joint response.

The Bereaved Families Council announced this at a press conference held in front of the memorial incense altar at Hwaseong City Hall on the afternoon of the 28th, the fifth day since the accident.

The council includes about 80 family members of 17 victims, including 3 Koreans and 14 Chinese out of the 23 victims. However, the families of the remaining 6 victims have not yet joined the council as they have been unreachable since the early stages of the accident or their identities were confirmed late.

A council official stated, "The day before, the employer suddenly showed up without any sincere explanation or compensation plan and made a superficial apology," adding, "Afterwards, there were attempts to contact individuals without any agreement or explanation to all the bereaved families in order to settle the matter." They explained, "The entire group of bereaved families could not help but feel anger at such attempts and thus formed the council to respond collectively."

The council said, "From now on, we will work together to uncover the truth of the incident."

The council also announced that it will cooperate with civic groups including the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, the Lawyers for a Democratic Society, and the Labor Rights Realization Labor Consultants Association, as well as other organizations beyond the bereaved families.
