Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Nominated as Next NATO Secretary General

Unanimous Decision... Official Appointment Starting October

Mark Rutte, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, has been nominated as the next Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

NATO announced on the 26th (local time) that it held a meeting in Brussels, Belgium, and made the decision unanimously.

Prime Minister Rutte will officially take office starting this October, when the current Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg's term ends.

He is a center-right politician and the longest-serving Prime Minister of the Netherlands, having led the Dutch coalition government since 2010. He is regarded as having managed the government smoothly despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crises. He is even nicknamed "Mr. Normal."

After expressing his intention to resign last year due to disagreements over refugee policies that led to the collapse of the coalition government, he challenged for the NATO leadership position.
