On the 26th, Daejeon City conducted a joint drill at the City Hall Disaster and Safety Situation Room, simulating a radioactive leak scenario from the Hanaro reactor at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute due to an earthquake.
More than 600 personnel from over 20 organizations participated in this drill, including Yuseong-gu, the Daejeon Regional Office of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, the Korea Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences, military, police, and fire departments.
The drill involved checking each organization's emergency response team formation and operation, emergency alert issuance and dissemination, introduction of residents in the radiation emergency planning zone, operation of shelters (Jaun-dae Indoor Gymnasium) and radiation impact counseling centers, environmental radiation land surveys, joint radiation emergency medical treatment (7 hospitals), operation of on-site emergency medical centers and emergency clinics, radiation patient treatment (Chungnam National University Hospital), emergency alert issuance and dissemination, and nuclear facility recovery in case of radioactive leakage.
Notably, for the first time, the drill utilized the disaster safety communication network (PS-LTE) to connect four disaster sites?including the city and Nuclear Safety and Security Commission radiation emergency response headquarters, shelters, joint radiation monitoring centers, on-site radiation emergency medical centers, and the Hanaro room at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute?sharing training status among organizations.
Im Muk, Director of the Daejeon City Citizen Safety Office, stated, “This year’s drill focused on strengthening practical response capabilities to radiation disasters by utilizing the disaster safety communication network (PS-LTE) for the first time. We will continue to do our best to protect citizens’ lives and property by enhancing disaster response capabilities through close cooperation among related organizations.”
