Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is conducting 'inspection and maintenance of sewer facilities' to prevent urban flooding during the summer rainy season.

Gwangju Dong-gu, Fully Prepared for Flood Damage from Heavy Rain During the Monsoon Season

Dong-gu is focusing all efforts on inspecting storm drains installed on major arterial roads and performing dredging work. This is because the 'storm drain,' one of the sewer facilities, is installed along the sides of roads to facilitate the drainage of rainwater during heavy rains, thereby preventing flood damage.

In particular, since insufficient water flow in sewer pipes is identified as a major cause of urban flooding during heavy rains, it is important to manage storm drains, which can be considered the starting point of sewer pipes, without blockage to allow rainwater to drain quickly.

To prevent accidents such as pedestrians falling due to manhole cover displacement or corrosion of concrete manholes (decorative manholes) during flooding, plans include replacing them with cast iron manhole covers and checking the installation status of fall prevention facilities inside manholes to prepare for safety accidents.

Im Taek, the mayor of Dong-gu, said, "When various trash, cigarette butts, and fallen leaves accumulate, the drains get blocked and cannot function properly, causing poor drainage and becoming a main cause of flooding during heavy rains." He added, "We will do our best to meticulously maintain all sewer facilities to prevent any inconvenience to citizens' daily lives."
