'National Party Members' Convention' to Elect Democratic Party Leader and Supreme Council Member
Han Minsu: "Full-Scale Preparation for a Mass Party of Member Sovereignty"
Uncertain Popularity Amid Lee Jaemyung's Sole Candidacy Prospect
The Democratic Party of Korea has completed the formation of the National Party Members' Convention Preparatory Committee (Jeondae Junbiwi). The committee will oversee the party convention scheduled for August 18.
On the 26th, following the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly main building in the morning, the Democratic Party announced the list of members for the Preparatory Committee and the Central Party Election Commission. Han Minsu, the party spokesperson, told reporters, "At today's closed Supreme Council meeting, we approved the agenda for the Preparatory Committee," adding, "The chairperson will be four-term lawmaker Lee Chun-seok, vice-chairpersons will be lawmakers Wi Seong-gon and Lee Su-jin, and the general headquarters chief will be lawmaker Hwang Myeong-seon." Lee Chun-seok is a member of the National Assembly representing Iksan City Gap, Jeonbuk, for the 18th, 19th, 20th, and 22nd terms.

The spokesperson also said, "The agenda for the composition of the Central Party Election Commission was approved," adding, "The chairperson will be four-term lawmaker Lee Gae-ho, and the vice-chairpersons will be lawmakers Kim Jeong-ho and Lim Oh-kyung." Along with the announcement of regional committee chairs and members, he mentioned, "In accordance with the party constitution and regulations, the proportions of women, youth, and external members have been appropriately maintained." Regarding the background of the appointments, he said, "Both the preparatory committee chair and the election commission chair have held various party duties and positions," noting, "Lawmaker Lee Chun-seok also served as secretary-general, and lawmaker Lee Gae-ho was the policy committee chair immediately prior."
The Democratic Party expects that only former party leader Lee Jae-myung will run in this party representative election. Compared to the People Power Party, which has four candidates, interest in the party convention appears to be lower. On the 24th, Lee Jae-myung resigned from the party leadership, stating, "I will observe the situation for a while, but if it was certain that I would not run, I would not have resigned," implying a challenge for re-election. Aside from him, there are hardly any other figures rumored as potential candidates for the party leader position.
Park Chan-dae, acting party leader and floor leader, said at the Supreme Council meeting that day, "Our entire leadership will unite and prepare the National Party Members' Convention in August thoroughly," adding, "It is a heavy responsibility to take on this important role (acting party leader) during such a critical time."
