The Korea Diabetes Association announced on the 26th that it will hold the '2024 Ansan Citizens Diabetes Walking Contest' on the 28th at Danwon Health Center and Hwarang Amusement Park in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province.
This walking contest was organized to help diabetics manage their blood sugar levels, as many know that exercise is effective for blood sugar control but fail to practice it in daily life. The Korea Diabetes Association explained, "The main purpose of the contest is to help diabetics exercise joyfully without burden and to facilitate mutual interaction." According to the Korean Diabetes Association, as of 2020, there were 6.05 million diabetic patients aged 30 and above in South Korea, but only about 60% actually receive treatment, and only around 25% are properly managed. Therefore, the event aims to raise awareness of the need for proper management through exercise such as walking.
The event features a variety of programs including participation in the ‘Hope Walk 6.5 km Walking Campaign,’ blood sugar measurement and comparison before and after exercise, diabetes self-management lectures, Arirang gymnastics, and a 90-minute walk around Hwarang Amusement Park. Additionally, participants will receive gifts such as blood sugar management foods for diabetics.
