Jung-gu District in Seoul is collaborating with Seoul National University Lifelong Education Institute to provide local students with opportunities to preview university lectures and make decisions about their college admission and career paths.
Among the 25 autonomous districts in Seoul, Jung-gu has the fewest students and is directly managing career education for local students to compensate for the lack of educational infrastructure compared to other areas. To this end, on February 15, 2023, Jung-gu signed a business agreement with Seoul National University Lifelong Education Institute to support youth career education, offering advanced programs to students in the district, which has received great responses.
In 2024, three types of programs will be supported: ▲ Visiting University ▲ In-depth Exploration of University Majors ▲ Dreaming My Future.
First, the ‘Visiting University’ program, a demand-tailored program where Seoul National University instructors visit local high schools directly, will be conducted. Out of a total of 83 university programs, each school selects two, featuring practical and discussion-based classes that are difficult to cover in the regular curriculum. Each subject targets 20 to 30 students, with about 200 students from four schools participating.
From July 3 to 5, Hwanil High School will host the programs ‘Understanding Artificial Neural Networks and Calculus with the Eyes’ and ‘Media Literacy in Our Era.’ Then, from July 12 to 18, Seongdong High School will run ‘New Drug and Antibiotic Development Using Artificial Intelligence (AI),’ ‘Financial Economy Briefing,’ and ‘History of Korean Economic Growth’ programs. From August 22 to September 6, Jangchung High School will offer ‘Mathematical Foundations of Artificial Intelligence (AI)’ and ‘Global Issues and a Sustainable Future’ programs, and from November 4 to 7, Ewha Girls’ High School will conduct ‘Biotechnology Classroom Understood Through Experiments’ and ‘Chemistry Classroom Understood Through Experiments’ programs.
Additionally, for local third-year middle school students, a school-union event featuring seven programs including ‘Autonomous Driving Car Monster M’ will be held from November 19 to 22 at the Jung-gu Education Support Center to assist prospective high school students in career selection.
Moreover, the ‘In-depth Exploration of University Majors’ program, which allows students to visit Seoul National University campus and preview future majors, will be operated in early September. This program offers about 160 students from four local high schools the opportunity to study eight major subjects such as Business Administration and Computer Engineering in university classrooms and participate in practical exercises and experiments, which is expected to receive great enthusiasm from students.
In November, the ‘Dreaming My Future’ program will be held for elementary and middle school students, including tours of Seoul National University and career exploration activities.
Through these various out-of-school ‘Career and College Admission Programs,’ Jung-gu is expanding students’ choices and supplementing in-school educational programs.
A Jung-gu official stated, "Through these advanced programs linked with Seoul National University, we will strengthen the educational capabilities of local students and contribute to expanding opportunities for career and college admission exploration," adding, "We plan to continuously support local students in their journey to find their dreams and career paths."
