On the 24th (local time), Kompas.com and other foreign media reported that on the 18th, at around 1 p.m., a woman at a gym on the third floor in Pontianak City, West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia, slowed down the treadmill to walk slowly but fell out of an open window behind her. CCTV footage of the incident showed the woman losing her balance while on the treadmill and falling through the open window.

All the treadmills in this gym were installed so that users faced the windows with their backs to them. Unfortunately, the window behind the treadmill the woman was using was open. The distance between the window and the treadmill was only about 60 cm. Moreover, the distance between the floor and the bottom of the window was just 30 cm. While slowing down and wiping sweat on the treadmill, the woman suddenly lost her balance and fell. She tried to hold onto the window frame to prevent falling but still fell. She was immediately taken to the hospital but suffered a severe head injury and ultimately passed away.

Police investigation revealed that glass used in high-rise buildings should be thick to ensure the safety of residents, but the gym’s window glass was very thin. Additionally, the window was open at the time of the accident and had no locking mechanism. Although there was a warning sticker at the gym advising not to open the window, the sticker was damaged and the text was obscured.

The gym officials explained, "The treadmills were left running so that members would not get bored," and "The window was opened to clean the outside glass, but an employee forgot to close it afterward." Currently, some officials including the gym’s representative are under investigation for involuntary manslaughter, and authorities plan to review the gym’s operating license.
