Opening Bibigo Store on Amazon Germany and Selling 19 K-Food Items
Q1 European Food Sales Grow 45% Year-on-Year
CJ CheilJedang announced on the 25th that it has officially launched the 'Bibigo Store' on Amazon, Germany's largest e-commerce platform, and started selling K-food products. Along with this, it is achieving results by continuing to enter major distribution channels in neighboring Western European countries such as the Netherlands.
The 'Bibigo Store,' which opened on Amazon Germany last month, sells a total of 19 Bibigo products including gim snacks, K-sauces, dumplings, and chicken. Notably, this is the first time gim in snack form has been listed on Amazon Germany, receiving positive responses from local consumers who have a high demand for healthy snacks.
Since CJ CheilJedang made a full-scale entry into Germany by acquiring the frozen food company 'Mainfrost' in 2018, it has steadily expanded its presence in mainstream channels. Starting with Edeka, the leading local supermarket chain in 2019, it launched Bibigo dumplings, seasoned chicken, and gim at Globus and Tegut in 2022, and at Rewe last year, thereby expanding its distribution network throughout Germany. Through this, Bibigo's market share in the German business-to-consumer (B2C) dumpling market grew from 18% in 2021 to 48% last year.
In the neighboring Netherlands, CJ CheilJedang has continued to expand the K-food territory by entering major supermarkets such as Albert Heijn, Jumbo, and Hoogvliet. Especially at Albert Heijn, the largest supermarket chain locally, three types of Bibigo dumplings (Chicken & Vegetable, Kimchi & Chicken, Vegan BBQ) and seasoned chicken have gained great popularity, with 'Beef Bulgogi Dumplings' and 'Soy Honey Chicken' recently added. In Belgium, Bibigo dumplings are sold at Delhaize and Carrefour, the second and third largest supermarkets locally.
CJ CheilJedang plans to accelerate entry into large distribution channels in new Western European countries this year and use this as a foothold to expand throughout Europe. To this end, it is conducting a Bibigo dumpling sales event with Aldi, a famous supermarket chain in Switzerland, while also formalizing local business by establishing a corporation in France last month. In the first quarter, CJ CheilJedang's total food sales in Europe grew 45% compared to the same period last year.
Seo Hyo-kyo, head of CJ CheilJedang's European business division, said, "We are rapidly increasing our presence in local mainstream distribution channels with customized strategies reflecting cultural characteristics and consumer trends," adding, "We will lead the expansion of K-food's base in Europe by introducing various products beyond dumplings, including chicken, processed rice, sauces, and kimchi."
