Ruling and opposition parties to finalize assembly organization on the 27th
In-house voices call for reappointment of Choo Kyung-ho... Choo takes a hard line on resignation
The People Power Party agreed to take seven standing committee chair positions and will attend four standing committee meetings on the 25th. The 'floor struggle' within the standing committees is expected to intensify.
On this day, the People Power Party will participate in the National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee hearing on support measures for victims of jeonse fraud, as well as the plenary meetings of the Education Committee, the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, and the Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Committee. To this end, they submitted the list of members for the relevant standing committees to the Speaker of the National Assembly the day before. The People Power Party will hold a party caucus meeting on the morning of the 27th to elect seven standing committee chairpersons and the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. Once the People Power Party internally elects the standing committee chairpersons and the Deputy Speaker, the ruling and opposition parties are expected to hold a plenary session on the same day to complete the organization of the 22nd National Assembly's first half. The People Power Party has argued that considering the physical time required under party rules and regulations to elect the Deputy Speaker and standing committee chairpersons, the plenary session can only be held on the 27th.
In the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, the Democratic Party of Korea will review the 'Broadcasting Three Acts,' which it is pushing as party policy. There is a possibility of a clash between the ruling and opposition parties over the Broadcasting Three Acts, which were discarded due to President Yoon Suk-yeol's exercise of the veto power. On the previous day, Choo Kyung-ho, the floor leader of the People Power Party, said upon receiving the seven standing committee chair positions, "We will intensify the floor struggle to block the Democratic Party's legislative rampage and parliamentary dictatorship aimed at shielding leader Lee Jae-myung." However, the floor struggle does not necessarily mean collective action by ruling party members within the standing committees. Cho Ji-yeon, the floor spokesperson, told reporters at the National Assembly that morning, "As this is our first time entering the standing committees, rather than collective action, individual members will diligently carry out their legislative activities."
Within the floor, there are calls for reaffirmation of confidence in Floor Leader Choo Kyung-ho, who took responsibility for the negotiation of the floor organization and tendered his resignation. After Choo expressed his intention to resign, three-term lawmakers including Kim Seok-ki and Jeong Jeong-sik held a meeting and stated that they could not accept Choo's resignation. However, Choo's determination to step down is known to be firm.
