Confirmed as 5.56mm Rifle Bullet 'Dongsimtan'
A bullet presumed to be a ricocheted round (a bullet that deviates from its trajectory after hitting an obstacle) was found lodged in an apartment near a military shooting range in Incheon.
According to the Army on the 24th, a report was received by the police on the 21st that a bullet tip was embedded in an outdoor air conditioning unit installed on the rooftop of an apartment in Incheon. Upon joint inspection by the military and police, one bullet tip was found lodged in the outdoor unit, and there were no casualties.
The bullet was identified as a 5.56mm copper bullet called a 'copper core bullet.' The Army explained that although lead bullets had been used until now, due to environmental pollution concerns, both copper core bullets and lead bullets are currently used together during regular shooting training.
An Army official stated, "From today, the use of 5.56mm copper core bullets has been temporarily suspended across all units," adding, "The Defense Science Research Institute is conducting a detailed examination of the bullet found in the outdoor unit, and follow-up measures will be taken based on the results."
