On the 23rd (local time), the California Fire Department announced that rescue teams found Lucas McCleish (34), who had been reported missing, deep in the mountains of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, south of San Francisco, on the evening of the 20th. Several reports had been received over the previous days of someone calling for help in the area, but the exact location could not be determined until a drone deployed by the local sheriff's office helped locate McCleish.

On the morning of the 11th, McCleish stopped by a friend's house near Big Basin Redwoods State Park and heard about the beautiful granite cliffs in the area, prompting him to go hiking alone. Thinking it was a light hiking trail that could be completed in about three hours, McCleish only took a flashlight and a folding knife with him.

However, he ended up entering a large area devastated by wildfires and got lost there. McCleish testified, "It looked completely different from other mountain terrains," and added, "I did not anticipate that after being burned so badly by the fire, it would turn into a desert-like area where I couldn't find my way." In the deep mountains of the U.S., there are many places where cell phone signals do not reach at all. His family realized something was wrong when he was missing and unreachable during a gathering on Father's Day, the 16th, and filed a missing person report.

After wandering in the mountains for several days, he survived by drinking waterfall and valley water and eating wild berries. An avid hiker, he did not feel great fear until the fifth day after being stranded, but as hypothermia worsened and he slipped and injured himself on rocks, the survival challenge intensified, and he recognized the seriousness of his situation. He also narrowly escaped an encounter with a cougar, North America's mountain lion.

Starting on the eighth day after being stranded, he began shouting for help, hoping someone would hear his voice, and on the tenth day, he spotted a drone flying overhead. He recalled, "I hoped it wasn't a mirage." He added, "I lost 30 pounds (13.6 kg) in 10 days due to a water diet," and explained, "If you drink 1.5 gallons (5.7 liters) of water daily, you don't need food until your body's carbohydrates are completely depleted."
