Meta Expected to Expand User Base
WSJ "Could Reduce Dependence on OpenAI"
Apple is reportedly discussing a plan to partner with Meta to integrate Meta's generative AI model into its own artificial intelligence (AI) system, 'Apple Intelligence.' If this collaboration is realized, Apple, a latecomer in the AI market led by the OpenAI-Microsoft (MS) alliance and Google, will be able to expand its own AI ecosystem and services. Meta is also expected to significantly expand its user base through Apple's extensive ecosystem.
On the 23rd (local time), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing sources, that Apple is discussing AI collaboration plans with Meta.
Apple Intelligence is an AI system applied to all Apple devices, including the iPhone. Although Apple has developed its own AI models, it plans to collaborate with AI leaders to perform complex and specific AI tasks and strengthen service competitiveness. As a first step, Apple has partnered with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, and decided to provide ChatGPT functionality through its own voice assistant, Siri. Apple also expressed its desire to integrate Google's generative AI, Gemini, into Apple Intelligence.
Additionally, Apple is discussing plans to incorporate AI models from Meta, Google, as well as AI startups Anthropic and the conversational search engine Perplexity into Apple Intelligence. If Apple collaborates with multiple AI partners, users of Apple devices are expected to be able to choose which external AI models to use within Apple Intelligence.
Instead of requiring mutual payments with AI companies, Apple plans to allow these companies to sell their premium services through Apple Intelligence. Apple will take a portion of the revenue.
WSJ stated, "By engaging in discussions with various AI companies, Apple can avoid over-reliance on OpenAI," adding, "However, it remains to be seen how openly Apple will offer its new AI platform to external AI companies."
