Jang Dong-hyuk Resigns as Chief Floor Spokesperson... Han Dong-hoon Likely Running Mate
Yoon Sang-hyun Challenges Han Dong-hoon and Won Hee-ryong, Asking "Can You Build a Winning Party?"
Han Dong-hoon, Won Hee-ryong, and Na Kyung-won Announce Candidacies in Succession at the Communication Office on the 23rd
Former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min's decision not to run has made a four-way race between Na Kyung-won, Won Hee-ryong, Yoon Sang-hyun, and Han Dong-hoon likely in the People Power Party's leadership election scheduled for the 23rd of next month. Lawmakers inside the National Assembly have begun to actively check candidates outside the Assembly.
On the 21st, former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min announced on his social media that he would not run for party leader, stating, "I have concluded that it is a meaningless challenge." He added, "When the urgency that 'if we don't change, we will perish' begins, I will fulfill my role." With Yoo, who was also considered a contender for party leadership, deciding his position, a four-way race seems certain in the leadership election.
Yoon Sang-hyun, who officially declared his candidacy, will announce his run around 11:30 a.m. at Yonghyeon Market in Michuhol District, Incheon. The day before, Yoon told reporters at the National Assembly Members' Office Building, "Those who lost in the general election should take time for self-reflection," taking a jab at former Emergency Committee Chairman Han Dong-hoon and former Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong.
Han Dong-hoon, who called President Yoon Suk-yeol to express his decision to run, will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. on the 23rd at the National Assembly Communication Office to declare his candidacy. Han has set up his campaign office in the Daesan Building in Yeouido, Seoul, and completed the formation of his staff. His running mates for the Supreme Council candidate positions are reportedly Chief Floor Spokesperson Jang Dong-hyuk and lawmaker Park Jung-hoon. Jang, the Chief Floor Spokesperson, told reporters at the National Assembly, "Yesterday, I informed Floor Leader Choo Kyung-ho that I would resign from the Chief Floor Spokesperson position," adding, "I will share my stance on whether I will run in the leadership election once it is finalized."
Lawmaker Na Kyung-won and former Minister Won Hee-ryong will also declare their candidacies at the same place and day as Han. Na will announce her run earlier at 1 p.m., while Won has scheduled his announcement for 3 p.m., after Han's declaration. During a caucus meeting at the National Assembly, Na told reporters, "I will declare my candidacy on Sunday. Ahead of the leadership election, I really want to break the politics of lining up and jockeying for position," adding, "There should be no incidents like a second petition. I always want politics to be about serving the people."
Meanwhile, Yoon continued to check Han and Won today. On CBS radio, Yoon said, "It is odd to say that Han will create a winning party," adding, "Han, as Minister of Justice, led the investigation into Representative Lee Jae-myung, but he was not even arrested. The party's seats shrank in the general election, so the idea that he will build a winning party and defeat Representative Lee does not resonate." Regarding Won, Yoon said, "He is a great person, but he lost in the same district as Representative Lee in this election," emphasizing, "There is no justification for electing someone who lost to Representative Lee as party leader in a leadership election aimed at creating a winning party."
The People Power Party has decided to maintain a runoff vote in this leadership election. With Han showing an advantage in various opinion polls and the phrase 'Eodaehan (Anyway, the leader is Han Dong-hoon)' circulating, the runoff vote could be a variable. If Han fails to secure a majority in the first round, unification among other candidates could occur.
