Use of Personal Information Without Resident Consent
Prosecution Seeks 6 Months to 1 Year Imprisonment for Each Case
The prosecution has requested a prison sentence for former Seoul Mapo District Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun, who was indicted on charges of using commendation certificates for election purposes ahead of the local elections.
On the 19th, the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office, during the first trial of former Mayor Yoo at the Seoul Western District Court Criminal Division 11 (Presiding Judge Bae Seong-jung), requested a 6-month prison sentence for violating the Public Official Election Act and a 1-year prison sentence for violating the Personal Information Protection Act.
Former Mayor Yoo is accused of using commendation certificates awarded for COVID-19 contributions to encourage voting and leveraging these certificates for election purposes targeting district residents ahead of the June 2022 local elections.
He is also charged with illegally using the personal information of residents who intended to receive the commendation certificates during the election campaign without their consent.
Meanwhile, after losing in the local elections, former Mayor Yoo is currently working as an aide in the office of Jeong Cheong-rae, a member of the Democratic Party representing the Mapo-eul district.
