Lotte World Opens Ice Rink Time Capsule for 20th Anniversary
On June 29, 2004, Lotte World began renewing its ice rink to improve ice quality. At that time, they melted all the existing ice and invited about 50 guests to hold a 'Time Capsule Sealing Ceremony.' The approximately 13 cm cylindrical time capsule contained messages written by guests addressed to their beloved family members and lovers 20 years in the future, along with family photos. The time capsules were sealed beneath the ice rink at its center.
In July 2021, the ice rink was renewed into a complex cultural space called 'Ice Garden,' and the ice was melted again to retrieve the time capsules sealed beneath the ice. Marking the 20th anniversary this year, the time capsules were opened. Inside were various stories, including messages hoping that a newborn daughter had grown into a dignified university student, messages expecting that the sender and their spouse would have embarked on a world tour in their twilight years 20 years later, messages wondering whether the sender had achieved their dreams, and messages containing special connections with the ice rink.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ice rink time capsule, Lotte World is seeking out the guests who sealed the time capsules together at that time. They plan to return the time capsules, which have been frozen for 20 years, to their owners and present small gifts as a token of gratitude for the love sent by the guests.
