Assemblywoman Hwang Jeong-a: "Cell Phone Spam at Disaster Level in the Last 5 Months" Hwang Jeong-a / Office of the Member of Parliament

This year, spam calls on mobile phones related to stock investments and loan solicitations have surged to disaster levels, but the government has been criticized for failing to respond adequately.

According to data on 'Mobile Phone Spam Reports and Detection Status' submitted by the Korea Communications Commission to Hwang Jeong-ah, a member of the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea (Daejeon Yuseong-gu Eul), the number of mobile phone spam cases from January to May totaled 168,620,079, surpassing half of last year's total mobile phone spam cases (295,498,099).

The average monthly number of spam cases from January to May this year was 33,724,015, an increase of 36.9% compared to last year's monthly average (24,624,841).

The annual number of mobile phone spam cases was analyzed as △44,912,292 in 2021 △38,772,284 in 2022 △295,498,099 in 2023, showing a significant increase in reports starting last year.

Assemblywoman Hwang Jeong-ah stated, "Many citizens are experiencing disruptions in their daily lives due to the recent surge in spam messages," and criticized, "Yet, the Yoon Seok-yeol administration has failed to properly identify the causes of this spam disaster."

She added, "The government must accurately determine the causes of this large-scale spam disaster and have the Korea Communications Commission and investigative agencies work together to investigate the situation."
