The 'Ordinance on Support for Deductibles of Automobile Insurance for Official Vehicles' proposed by Jeon Seung-il, a member of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Council, has passed the standing committee.
The ordinance is significant in that it establishes a legal basis for budget support of the deductible that drivers must pay for automobile insurance premiums of official vehicles involved in accidents during official duties. The main content is to support all or part of the automobile insurance deductible within the scope of the deductible limit according to the insurance policy, up to 20% of the damage amount to the vehicle.
Councilor Jeon stated, “According to data received from Seo-gu Office, there are a total of 134 vehicles owned by the district, with 16 accidents each in 2021 and 2022, 18 accidents in 2023, and 16 accidents up to April 2024,” adding, “It is difficult to actively perform official duties due to the responsibility and burden of traffic accidents occurring during official duties, and the resulting damage ultimately affects the residents.”
He also said, “Until now, there was no legal basis for support in case of traffic accidents occurring during official duties, so public officials often bear the costs related to traffic accidents personally and tend to use their own vehicles,” and added, “Through this ordinance, we expect to alleviate the difficulties faced by public officials, encourage active performance of official duties, and ultimately bring benefits to the residents.”
