Yongin City and Icheon City in Gyeonggi Province have joined hands to establish a connecting road network between semiconductor hub cities.
On the 17th, Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il and Icheon Mayor Kim Kyung-hee signed a "Business Agreement for the Joint Development of the Semiconductor Industry Base" at the Icheon City Hall video conference room. On this day, Song Seok-jun, a member of the People Power Party, also attended the agreement ceremony.

This business agreement is a follow-up measure to the win-win cooperation agreement signed by the two cities last December to foster and support the semiconductor industry. The main goal is to establish a road network that organically connects key national semiconductor industry hubs such as the Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster National Industrial Complex, the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex, and SK Hynix in Icheon.
The two cities agreed to cooperate in building road networks including Local Road No. 84, Provincial Road No. 318, and Provincial Road No. 325 to facilitate the smooth movement of human and material resources necessary for the semiconductor industry. In addition, they pledged to jointly work to create an ecosystem of semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) companies in the two regions centered around the semiconductor industrial complex being established in Yongin.
The newly planned Local Road No. 84 is a 23.9 km four-lane road connecting Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, where the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster is located, to Daewol-myeon, Icheon, near the SK Hynix Icheon Campus. The two cities agreed to jointly strive to have this road network included in the 6th National Road and Local Road Construction Plan by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, scheduled to be finalized by the end of next year. In particular, they also plan to promote the construction of a new 12.3 km section connecting Idong-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, where the system semiconductor industrial complex is being established, to Wonsam-myeon, Yongin, where the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster is being developed.
Currently, construction is underway on a 6.4 km section of Local Road No. 84 from Dongtan 5-dong (Jung-dong), Hwaseong to Cheolli, Idong-eup, Yongin. The two cities expect that once this road extends to Daewol, Icheon, it will serve as a core axis of the national economy by concentrating semiconductor anchor companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, as well as advanced information technology (IT) companies.
Additionally, the two cities decided to jointly submit a petition to Gyeonggi Province to expand Provincial Road No. 318 (9.7 km) between Baekam, Yongin and Seolseong, Icheon, which currently has two lanes in both directions, to four lanes for more convenient interregional travel.
Mayor Lee Sang-il said, "The development of the semiconductor industry is crucial to strengthening South Korea's future competitiveness, so the two cities will pioneer a new path as the nation's only cooperative model for semiconductor industry development to lead the national economy."
Mayor Kim Kyung-hee said, "As partners and a community of fate that must compete in the global market, the two cities will continue to communicate and cooperate organically to achieve tangible results."
