As Lee Man-gyu, the current chairman of the Daegu Metropolitan Council, is highly likely to be re-elected as chairman for the latter half of the term, six council members, including Kim Daehyun, have come forward to oppose his consecutive term.
On the afternoon of the 17th, six council members?Kim Daehyun, Park Wookeun, Hwang Sunja, Yoon Kwongeun, Park Changseok, and Lee Seongo?held a press conference at the council's meeting room, stating, "It is unjust for the chairman of the city council to serve consecutive terms. Although a ban on consecutive terms has not been codified, it has been an unwritten rule for over 30 years."
From the left, Lee Sungoh, Yoon Kwongeun, Kim Daehyun, Park Changseok, and Park Wookeun, five Daegu city council members, held a press conference in the Daegu City Council meeting room on the afternoon of the 17th to announce their opposition to the reappointment of the Daegu City Council chairman.
They warned, "A consecutive term for the chairman is expected to cause significant harm and will make it difficult for the council to fulfill its primary role of checking the executive branch. Over the past two years, the council has been criticized for merely rubber-stamping the executive's decisions. If the chairman pushes ahead with a consecutive term, the council could completely lose its function."
Meanwhile, it is reported that 26 out of 32 Daegu city council members gathered at a restaurant in Daegu on the 14th to express their support for Lee Man-gyu's consecutive term. The Daegu Metropolitan Council is scheduled to elect the chairman for the latter half of the term by vote on the 25th.
