LG Display, Industry's First to Independently Develop 'Generative AI'... Full Internal Implementation

LG Display is accelerating business innovation to create customer value by developing generative artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time in the industry. The company explained that it has built a large language model (LLM) in-house to prevent concerns about technology and information leakage.

On the 17th, LG Display announced that it had developed and introduced its own generative AI for the first time in the industry. Through generative AI, the time required for problem review and resolution, which used to take several months, can now be reduced to seconds.

LG Display’s generative AI learns knowledge specialized for LG Display and produces optimized results. When a question related to product quality is entered into the AI system, it analyzes accumulated in-house specialized knowledge and provides the best answer. For example, if you enter "Tell me how to enhance the quality of product A," it analyzes the relevant data and immediately provides an answer.

With the introduction of generative AI, employees can easily solve problems without having to ask the person in charge or search past materials when professional knowledge is needed. Using generative AI, they can acquire the know-how of predecessors, which has been assetized as data, within seconds. This enables the leveling up of work knowledge. Employees can focus more on core tasks such as customer value innovation activities.

LG Display emphasized that it strengthened security by building the LLM in-house. Since the emergence of generative AI, there have been ongoing concerns about sensitive data being leaked outside the company by inputting corporate technology information into external AI systems. LG Display’s generative AI is designed to search knowledge information specialized for LG Display through the in-house LLM, ensuring security stability.

LG Display announced that it developed its own generative AI in collaboration with LG AI Research and LG CNS. For the LLM used for learning and analysis, it utilizes 'Exaone,' a super-large AI developed by LG AI Research. The role of finding answers from about 300,000 internal documents tailored to specific questions is handled by 'Keylook,' a search engine developed by LG CNS. LG Display and LG CNS developed a PPT preprocessing algorithm considering that about 91% of internal documents are in PPT format. LG CNS applied 15 preprocessing algorithms to Keylook so that it can accurately recognize not only text but also unstructured text such as tables and charts.

LG Display said it plans to introduce a more advanced generative AI in the second half of the year. It plans to continuously improve performance by learning from employee usage data. Within this year, it also plans to expand the search area beyond quality to other fields such as patents, safety, equipment, and purchasing.

Lee Byung-seung, Head of the Digital Transformation (DX) Group at LG Display (Executive Director), said, "With the introduction of our proprietary generative AI, we have fundamentally blocked information leakage outside and strengthened the work capabilities of each employee. We will accelerate business innovation through digital transformation."
