Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stated on the 15th that Japan is considering sanctions against third-country entities, including China, that provide military-use materials to Russia, according to a report by Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) on the 16th.
After the Group of Seven (G7) summit held in Italy on the same day, Prime Minister Kishida told reporters, "Japan is reviewing new sanctions, including measures against entities in third countries such as China." He added, "We expect this to contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of sanctions against Russia."
In a joint statement released after the summit, the G7 said, "China's continued support for Russia's defense industry base enables Russia to sustain its illegal war in Ukraine," and urged, "We call on China to halt the transfer of dual-use goods, including weapon components and equipment, to Russia's defense sector."
Japan's public broadcaster NHK recently reported that a plan is being discussed to ban exports from Japan to entities suspected of involvement in providing military-use materials to Russia.
Until now, the Japanese government has not imposed sanctions on Chinese domestic companies in relation to the Ukraine war.
