Gwangju Metropolitan City evaluates five autonomous districts annually in 16 items across four areas including resource circulation, recycling increase, and food waste reduction to promote the transition to a resource-circulating society.

In this year’s evaluation, Gwangsan-gu received high marks for various projects such as conducting resource circulation education and campaigns to foster a resource circulation culture, installing transparent PET bottle collection machines and distributing dedicated bags, and increasing the amount of recyclable resource separation collection.

Efforts to reduce waste output and improve citizen awareness were also recognized, including operating a monitoring team to reduce single-use products, guiding and inspecting waste business sites, inducing food waste reduction, cracking down on and managing illegal dumping, and organizing plogging campaigns.

Additionally, Gwangsan-gu is actively promoting improvements in the household waste collection system this year, including the introduction of hydrogen-powered cleaning vehicles.

Park Byeong-gyu, Mayor of Gwangsan-gu, stated, “Gwangsan-gu is leading efforts to reduce waste and practice saving and reusing resources through cooperation between the public and private sectors,” adding, “We will further strengthen policy efforts to reduce carbon emissions and realize resource circulation in the era of climate crisis.”
