Daegu City Councilor Cho Kyunggu Proposes Ordinance to Support AI Industry Development

Artificial Intelligence Market Size Reaches 4 Trillion Won, Growing at 14.9% Annually

Daegu City Council member Cho Kyunggu (People Power Party, Suseong-gu 2) announced on the 11th that he has proposed the "Daegu Metropolitan City Ordinance on the Promotion and Support of Artificial Intelligence Convergence Industry" at the 309th regular session, aiming to establish a foundation for the AI convergence industry and contribute to the development of the local economy.

As information and communication technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, and metaverse expand into various fields including manufacturing, healthcare, and finance, a wave of innovation is sweeping across the economy and society as a whole. According to the "Domestic Artificial Intelligence Analytics Market Outlook" by International Data Corporation Korea Ltd (Korea IDC), the domestic AI market is expected to record an average annual growth rate of 14.9% over five years from 2023 to 2027, reaching a scale of 4.4636 trillion KRW.

In September 2023, the government announced the "Korea Artificial Intelligence Leap Plan" to expand AI across the nation, including daily life, industrial sites, and public administration. Subsequently, in March this year, it announced the launch of the "Manufacturing AI Foundation Project" centered on the Yeongnam region to bridge the AI gap between the capital and regional areas and drive a new leap forward for the regional economy.

Daegu City is also making multifaceted efforts to create an environment where global and platform companies related to the AI convergence industry can settle, such as establishing a 100 billion KRW ABB-dedicated fund by 2026, building the ABB Global Campus, and nurturing high-level talent.

Council member Cho Kyunggu proposed this ordinance to provide an institutional basis for establishing a solid digital ecosystem centered on the AI convergence industry, in line with Daegu City's policies.

The main contents of the ordinance include establishing a basic plan for the promotion and support of the AI convergence industry, conducting surveys for the formulation and implementation of AI convergence industry-related policies, building infrastructure, nurturing professional talent, supporting technology development and commercialization, supporting international exchanges and joint research, and establishing cooperative systems with central administrative agencies, local governments, and related specialized institutions.

Council member Cho stated, "The AI convergence industry has the potential to innovatively transform many aspects of our lives, and I am confident it will make a significant contribution to strengthening industrial competitiveness and revitalizing the local economy," adding, "I will do my best to ensure that Daegu can grow into the center of the AI convergence industry through systematic support for its promotion."
