Korean Man Who Killed Woman at Vietnamese Hotel Was Former LoL Pro Gamer

Promising Player Who Won 2016 International Tournament
Professional Performance Decline... Effectively Retired After Overseas Move

A Korean man, who was arrested on charges of murdering a woman he stayed with at a hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam, is reported to be a former professional gamer.

On the 7th, Ilyo Shinmun reported that the Korean man arrested on charges of murdering a Korean woman at a large hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam, on the 30th of last month is A (23), who was active as a professional player of "League of Legends (LoL)." Although it was initially reported that the arrested Korean man was in his 40s, this information was incorrect.

A visited a hotel in Hanoi around 1 p.m. on the 30th of last month with B, a Korean woman in her 30s. Vietnamese police stated that after they stayed together at the hotel, A attempted to have sexual intercourse with B, but B refused, leading to a dispute. After about 10 minutes of arguing, the police revealed that A is presumed to have strangled B and suffocated her with a pillow, causing her death. Immediately after committing the crime, A went up to the 65th floor of the hotel and attempted to take his own life but was stopped by a security guard, and was later arrested by the police, according to local media VN Express. The hotel reported A to the police, who arrested him on-site on suspicion of murder.

The exact motive for the crime is still under investigation. Local sources say that since Vietnamese media are not very reliable, it is difficult to be certain that the refusal of sexual intercourse, which has been reported as the motive, was the cause of the incident. It is reported that A is likely to be repatriated to Korea. There are also rumors locally that A may have mental illness or problems. Right after the incident, A was reportedly wandering around the hotel naked and went up to the 65th floor, which fueled such rumors.

A local police official told Ilyo Shinmun, "Although the principle is to punish locally, since it is a case involving Koreans, the Vietnamese authorities may send him to Korea. It is up to the Vietnamese authorities," adding, "It will take at least a month or more until repatriation."

A was once considered the most promising player in the LoL gaming scene. As an amateur, he won an international tournament in 2016, receiving much expectation and attention. However, A failed to meet expectations on the professional stage. When stable activities became difficult domestically, he accepted an offer and moved overseas, but things did not go well there either, and he is reported to have effectively retired.
