"Don't Tie Ribbons on Your Luggage"…Why My Bag Comes Out Late at the Airport

New York Post "Accessories Delay Baggage Claim"
May Cause Issues During Baggage Scanning Process

It has been revealed that attaching accessories such as ribbons to travel suitcases (carriers) actually causes the carriers to be delayed at the airport.

Recently, the New York Post in the United States reported this in an article titled "A warning from baggage handlers to passengers who tie ribbons on their travel carriers."

The New York Post explained, "Passengers sometimes attach ribbons or luggage tags to their checked baggage to find their carriers more easily," adding, "However, these accessories can delay the arrival of luggage at the baggage claim area."

It further quoted a baggage handler from Dublin International Airport in Ireland saying, "Ribbons tied by people to identify their bags can delay the delivery of carriers during baggage screening." There is a higher chance that luggage will arrive earlier when there are no ribbons or stickers attached to the carrier.

He explained, "Ribbons tied by passengers to identify their carriers can cause problems when scanning bags in the baggage storage area," and "If the carrier cannot be scanned automatically, it must be processed manually, which sometimes results in it not being loaded onto the plane."

Additionally, he urged passengers to remove old stickers attached to carriers as they can cause confusion during the baggage scanning process, and to place the wheels upward before checking in the carrier to prevent damage.

He also emphasized that marzipan, a confection called "majipan," should not be placed in the carrier. Marzipan is a soft candy made from crushed almonds or almond paste, sugar, and egg whites, and the handler explained that it can be called for bag inspection because its density is similar to some explosives.
