On the 5th, President Yoon Suk-yeol met with Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, President of Mauritania, who co-chaired the Korea-Africa Summit, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the fields of fisheries, minerals, infrastructure, and digital technology.

According to the Blue House, President Yoon held a summit meeting with President Ould Ghazouani at the Yongsan Presidential Office on the same day and exchanged views on the development of bilateral relations. Mauritania, as the chair country of the African Union (AU), co-hosted the Korea-Africa Summit held the previous day at KINTEX in Goyang together with Korea.

President Yoon expressed his special gratitude to President Ould Ghazouani for working together to successfully hold the summit.

The two leaders welcomed the fact that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1963, the relationship between the two countries has steadily developed, and following the summit held last year to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, another official visit and summit meeting took place this year.

The two leaders said that with the recent signing of the Trade and Investment Promotion Framework (TIPF), they expect economic cooperation between the two countries to diversify beyond fisheries.

Additionally, President Ould Ghazouani expressed hope to strengthen cooperation in infrastructure and digital sectors where Korea has strengths, such as seawater desalination plant construction, and the digitalization of education and administration.

Furthermore, he expressed gratitude for Korea’s contribution to nurturing future talents who will lead Mauritania’s development through development cooperation projects, and also thanked Korea for its decision to support Mauritania with a large number of tuberculosis diagnostic devices to improve public health.
