On the 3rd, multiple online communities posted a thread titled 'Interview with the Parents of the Miryang Rapists.' The post included a captured photo of a video interview with the parents of one of the suspects from the Miryang middle school girl gang rape case.
In the released photo, the suspect's mother, Ms. A, retorts, "Why should we feel sorry for the victim's family?" and asks, "Why should we?" She then questions, "Don't you think about the harm we have suffered?"
Ms. A continued, "You have to raise your daughter well. So you should raise her well to prevent such incidents," shifting the blame onto the victim and her parents. She showed a brazen attitude, saying, "When girls come to flirt, is there any boy who wouldn't fall for it?"
She then raised her voice, saying, "It's unfair," and "People are not silent because they have no voice."
Netizens who saw the post expressed criticism, saying, "Even the parents are complicit," "It still makes me angry when I see this," "What exactly is so unfair?" "Children raised by such parents clearly lack morality," and "Like parent, like child."
The Miryang middle school girl gang rape occurred in 2004 in Miryang, Gyeongnam Province, where 44 male students collectively raped a female middle school student. The perpetrators committed brutal crimes over a long period, including threatening the victim by filming videos to prevent her from reporting, but none of the 44 were criminally punished, causing national outrage.
Additionally, during the police investigation, the victim was subjected to secondary victimization through insulting remarks such as "You guys ruined all the water in Miryang" and "(The perpetrators) are the ones who will lead Miryang in the future, so what are you going to do?" which sparked controversy.
Recently, a YouTuber revealed that the ringleader of the 'Miryang middle school girl gang rape' case works at a restaurant in Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, which became famous after Baek Jong-won visited it, leading to renewed attention and widespread controversy over the statements made by those involved at the time.
