Mun Heon-il, Guro District Mayor, Leads Cleaning Around Rainwater Drains on Side Streets of Guro 2-dong on May 31
Guro-gu (District Mayor Moon Heon-il) will conduct a thorough cleaning around storm drains throughout June to prepare for heavy summer rains.
This is to prevent flooding damage such as stormwater backflow caused by the accumulation of various trash, cigarette butts, and fallen leaves inside or around the storm drains, which can impair their drainage function.
From May 31 to June 30, the district has designated this period as the cleaning season around storm drains in preparation for heavy summer rains. Together with directly managed environmental officers, the Clean Volunteer Group, and resident autonomous cleaning organizations, they will simultaneously clean the interiors and surroundings of storm drains across the district.
District-managed environmental officers will continuously monitor the cleanliness of storm drains and clean those along main roads, while resident autonomous cleaning organizations will focus on cleaning storm drains in alleys and flood-prone backstreets.
The district will directly carry out the cleaning of the interiors of 22,632 storm drains located within the area.
Additionally, June 26 has been designated as "Guro Clean Day," during which autonomous cleaning activities will be conducted in 16 neighborhoods, focusing on alleys, side streets, and flood-prone areas.
On the first day, May 31, District Mayor Moon Heon-il rolled up his sleeves and joined about 100 residents in cleaning around the storm drains in Guro 2-dong.
After the cleaning, Mayor Moon and participants including the Guro 2-dong Clean Volunteer Group, professional organizations, the Korea-China Multicultural (Clean Volunteer) Association, and the 365 Guro Environmental Guardians carried out campaigns promoting proper disposal of cigarette butts and smoking cessation.
District Mayor Moon Heon-il stated, “Since storm drains play an important role in handling road rainwater during rainfall, we will do our best to prevent flooding damage through continuous cleaning and management. We also hope that all residents will participate in creating a safe Guro-gu free from flood damage with mature civic awareness.”
