Sharp Japan Transforms Closing LCD Factory into AI Data Center

Japanese electronics company Sharp will operate a data center for artificial intelligence (AI) on the site of the dismantled LCD TV panel production plant in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) reported on the 3rd.

Sharp took a full-scale step forward by signing an agreement the day before to establish a joint venture company to operate the data center together with Japanese mobile carrier KDDI and system development company Data Section. The amount of investment, investment ratio, and data center investment amount have not yet been decided.

The company plans to provide services as a hub for large-scale language model (LLM) development and operation by equipping 1,000 servers with Nvidia's advanced AI graphics processing unit (GPU) "Blackwell," announced in March. According to Nikkei, it is expected to be the largest in Asia. According to Data Section, the scale of the latest GPU procurement is the largest among data centers in Asia.

Sharp built the Sakai City LCD TV panel plant in 2009 at a cost of about 430 billion yen, but announced that it will suspend operations in September due to a decline in operating rate.
