The 'Regional Representative Arts Group Support Project' is a new initiative by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. It targets metropolitan and basic local governments nationwide, excluding Seoul Special City and its districts, to support each region's representative performing arts groups. Eligible groups can participate in the recruitment through the e-Nara Doum website.
Earlier, the Ministry conducted a recruitment for this new project once from March to April this year. As a result of the recruitment, after expert evaluations by genre of about 40 performing arts groups applied by local governments, 22 groups were finally selected, and a total of 10.6 billion KRW is planned to be supported.
Based on field feedback, the Ministry is conducting an additional recruitment with expanded eligible detailed genres this time. Additional performing arts groups in the four fields of theater, music, dance, and traditional arts will be selected, and up to 2 billion KRW per group (with a 1:1 local government cost-sharing) will be supported.
As with the previous recruitment, various support methods are allowed, including ▲newly established groups ▲attracting existing private groups ▲attracting groups based in the metropolitan area to local regions.
Groups operating public arts organizations cannot apply, but applications are allowed if the detailed genre differs. The criteria have been relaxed to allow applications for creative musicals, opera choruses, etc., which were previously restricted. Local governments selected in the previous recruitment can also apply for different detailed genres. Additionally, even if a specific local government already operates a municipal symphony orchestra in the music field, if there is no municipal chamber orchestra, support applications for chamber orchestras can be made.
However, private performing arts groups that have received subsidies by being selected in each local government's '2024 Performing Arts Resident Group Support Project' cannot apply.
Selected groups must comply with conditions by February 2025, including ▲creating or producing at least one performance (including refurbishing existing works with local characteristics) ▲performing at least six times in the region during the project period (at least twice for newly established groups) ▲operating season members or project-based guest members ▲managing the project through the appointment of an artistic director.
The final selection results are expected to be announced in July.
Shin Eunhyang, Arts Policy Officer at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, “Since some support restrictions have been relaxed in this additional recruitment, we expect local governments to show greater interest in revitalizing their regions through performing arts and promoting the local performing arts scene.”
