Seoul Station Space Renovation Master Plan First Phase:
Idea Contest from 3rd to July 5th
Reflecting Citizens' Awareness and Demands in the Master Plan

The Seoul Metropolitan Government is establishing the 'Seoul Station Space Redevelopment Master Plan' to transform Seoul Station and Seoul Plaza into spaces for citizens. As the first step, an idea contest for citizens will be held.

Seoul Station and Plaza Space Overhaul... National Idea Contest for Space Planning

On the 2nd, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will hold the 'Seoul Station Space Concept Citizen Idea Contest,' inviting ideas on how to utilize the space around Seoul Station and the plaza and visions for their future appearance.

Seoul Station, a major hub for railroads and public transportation, is used by about 300,000 people daily. There have been continuous demands for improvements due to large-scale retail facilities, unauthorized buildings, and complicated transfer routes. With opportunities for transformation such as the expansion of GTX-A and B lines and the undergrounding of railroads, the contest is being promoted to build public consensus and identify citizens' needs.

The contest aims to gather diverse and creative ideas from the public regarding the utilization and future appearance of Seoul Station and the plaza. Key focuses include the symbolism of Seoul Station as the national central station, the creation of a citizen-centered Seoul Station Plaza, improvement of the surrounding landscape, and the design of a pedestrian network linking nearby areas. After the citizen idea contest, a design competition will be held targeting creative spatial planning experts.

The contest will run from the 3rd of this month until the 5th of next month. Any interested citizen can participate, freely proposing idea descriptions (A3, 2 pages) in any form such as text, drawings, or photographs, as long as they align with the contest theme.

Submissions will be selected by an internal and external judging committee composed of the Seoul honorary mayor and experts. The selected works will be announced on the 12th of next month. About 20 works will be selected, including one grand prize under the name of the Mayor of Seoul. The total prize money is 19 million KRW. Details regarding submissions and the contest can be found on the contest website.

Jo Nam-jun, Director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government Urban Space Headquarters, said, "This idea contest is a great opportunity to hear citizens' opinions, and we plan to reflect them in the comprehensive master plan for the Seoul Station area to envision the new future of Seoul Station. We will strive to restore Seoul Station’s status as a space for citizens."
