Announcement of the New Name 'Myeongdong Square' for Myeongdong Outdoor Advertising Free Display Zone
Meaning Myeongdong Embracing Four Plazas That Will Illuminate South Korea
Joint Public-Private Council Inauguration Ceremony Held on the 31st of Last Month, Agreement for the Development of Myeongdong Area
A new name is being given to the Myeongdong Outdoor Advertising Free Display Zone (around Sogong-dong 1 area).
Jung-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Kim Gil-seong) held the launch ceremony of the Myeongdong Outdoor Advertising Free Display Zone Public-Private Joint Council on the 31st of last month and announced the new name, ‘Myeongdong Square.’
‘Myeongdong Square’ means Myeongdong embracing four squares that will shine brightly in Korea. In the future, outdoor media will gradually gather here, creating four squares that emit different lights, symbolizing that Myeongdong will become a place filled with brighter and more vibrant energy beyond each individual light.
The district saw the necessity of having a brand for the Myeongdong Outdoor Advertising Free Display Zone to become a world-class outdoor advertising landmark. Daehong Communications contributed their talents pro bono, and after in-depth discussions, the name ‘Myeongdong Square’ was born.
The festival of lights that Myeongdong Square will weave will unfold from the end of this year. Around November, starting with Shinsegae Department Store, electronic billboards will be installed sequentially at Hana Bank, Lotte Department Store, and Kyowon Building by the first half of next year.
Meanwhile, the launch ceremony was held at Myeongdong Art Breeze with the attendance of 10 members including Jung-gu, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Seoul City, Myeongdong Tourism Special Zone Council, Shinsegae Department Store, Lotte Department Store, Hana Bank, Kyowon, LDF Lotte Duty Free, as well as related parties such as Daehong Communications, Korea OOH Association, and Korea Outdoor Advertising Media Association.
The council members pledged close cooperation and organic collaboration for the development of the Myeongdong area through the agreement. They aim to revitalize the local commercial district and K-culture through the economic effects brought by Myeongdong and create a win-win ecosystem that circulates benefits back to the local community.
The secretariat will be responsible for operating the Content Management System (CMS). This will enable systematic review and management of all media content within the zone. The goal is to screen high-quality video content and artistic content incorporating cutting-edge technology.
Outdoor advertising is now a common form of advertisement easily seen anywhere. For the outdoor advertising zone to not just be a cluster of ads but to have landmark characteristics that provide visitors with overwhelming awe and profound emotion, a ‘new space unlike any before’ must be created.
To this end, the district launched a ‘council and secretariat led by the district.’ This was based on the judgment that there must be an operating body that professionally oversees content management, street creation, and zone management. The public and private sectors pledged to actively join forces to strengthen public interest and maximize business feasibility, thereby maximizing social contribution.
Lee Sang-hoon, Vice Mayor and Chairperson of the Public-Private Joint Council, said, “We have now completed all institutional preparations for the full-scale creation and systematic, stable operation of the Free Display Zone,” and urged, “Please continue smooth communication and strengthened cooperation so that Myeongdong Square can establish itself as a representative landmark of Korea.”
Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu, said, “Myeongdong Square will become a new landmark of Korea that offers tourists ‘overwhelming awe and profound emotion,’” and added, “We will all work together to brighten Myeongdong, so that Myeongdong Square, a new space unlike any other, can become a source of pride for Korea.”
