Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon attended the '2024 Gyeonggi Province Residents' Children Scholarship Certificate Award Ceremony' hosted by the Gyeonggi Province Residents' Scholarship Foundation on the 31st of last month to encourage the scholarship recipients.
The Gyeonggi Province Residents' Scholarship Foundation selects scholarship students annually, considering academic performance and income levels among children of residents who have lived in the province for more than three years.
This year, the foundation is providing a total of 1.6 billion KRW in scholarships to 460 students.
At the event, attended by about 150 people including scholarship recipients and donors, the scholarship certificate award ceremony was held along with a 'Dream Capsule' event where the students left messages for their future selves.
Governor Kim expressed his gratitude to the scholarship fund donors and participated in the 'Dream Capsule' event, saying, "When I was a child with a very difficult home life, I received a scholarship, and my life changed a lot after that opportunity was given to me." He added, "When I was responsible for national finances and later as a university president, I wanted to create scholarships to give you dreams and hope. It is not free; you can repay society later in an appropriate way at the right time," encouraging the students.
Then, as the scholarship recipients shared their thoughts and dreams, Governor Kim said, "The best time in your life is when you find your dreams and pursue them," and urged, "There are many dream spoilers around us, but do not pay attention to them and find your own path."
Gyeonggi Province established a scholarship fund by contributing 13.5 billion KRW to the Gyeonggi Province Residents' Scholarship Foundation in 1988 to nurture talented individuals such as academic achievers and arts and sports specialists, and has been providing an annual subsidy of 1.6 billion KRW since 2020.
