Gyeonggi-do, Builds 'RE100 Platform' with 15 Organizations... Kim Dong-yeon Says "No Political Divide in Climate Change Response" Gyeonggi RE100 Platform Alliance Establishment Agreement Ceremony

Gyeonggi Province is collaborating with 15 public and private organizations, including the National Geographic Information Institute and Kakao Mobility, to establish the ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Platform,’ which allows users to view climate and energy-related data such as carbon emissions, absorption amounts, and renewable energy potential across the entire province in one place.

On the 31st, Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dong-yeon signed a business agreement for the establishment of the ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Platform Alliance’ at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office with public institutions such as the National Geographic Information Institute, National Institute of Forest Science, National Institute of Ecology, Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, Korea Transport Institute, Korea Energy Agency, Korea Environment Institute, and private companies including Kakao Mobility, SK Telecom, and Naver Cloud.

Within Gyeonggi Province, the Gyeonggi Research Institute, GH, Gyeonggi Environmental Energy Promotion Agency, Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy and Innovation, and Next Generation Convergence Technology Institute also participated.

In his greeting, Governor Kim Dong-yeon said, "I hope climate change can be addressed with bipartisan unity, without ideological or political considerations. Climate change must be confronted head-on and turned into an opportunity. I believe that the future growth engines of South Korea will come not from traditional sectors like semiconductors or mobility, but from AI and climate change industries. I hope we can join forces with Gyeonggi Province in responding to climate change in South Korea."

The Gyeonggi RE100 Platform will build spatial information on climate and energy across the entire Gyeonggi region by utilizing data such as aerial LiDAR, hyperspectral imaging (which records subdivided wavelengths of light beyond the visible spectrum), and building energy usage data. This climate crisis response platform based on objective and scientific data is the first of its kind in South Korea.

Using carbon absorption data, Gyeonggi Province can easily identify areas lacking forests and parks and apply relevant policies. Additionally, by analyzing carbon emissions from electricity and heating usage, the province can establish efficient carbon reduction policies and evaluate the effectiveness of policy implementation.

Moreover, the platform can analyze optimal locations and potential for renewable energy on buildings and idle land within the province. It can also measure regional temperatures and surface elevation, making it easier to identify heatwave-vulnerable areas and flood-prone zones during heavy rainfall, facilitating proactive prevention and planning.

Under this agreement, Gyeonggi Province will establish a collaborative system with related organizations and support RE100 data disclosure and administrative assistance. The National Geographic Information Institute will jointly develop a digital elevation model (0.5DEM), the National Institute of Forest Science will provide carbon absorption analysis technology support, and the National Institute of Ecology and Korea Environment Institute will assist with inter-agency data sharing and development of climate change response business models.

Private companies Kakao Mobility, SK Telecom, and Naver Cloud will support platform users in easily accessing and utilizing desired information through advanced technologies and data such as AI owned by each company.

Gyeonggi Province expects that the collaboration with these 15 public and private organizations will accelerate the establishment of the ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Platform.’ The province plans to operate a pilot service for small and medium-sized enterprises as early as October this year and officially launch the Gyeonggi RE100 Platform service in June next year.
