"Military Actions That May Harm Residents"
The UN Command has launched an official investigation into North Korea's release of balloons carrying filth toward South Korea.
On the 30th, the UN Command stated on Facebook that "this military action of sending a large number of balloons carrying filth that can harm local residents" is "not only aggressive and unhygienic but also constitutes a violation of the Armistice Agreement." They added, "An official investigation is underway regarding this issue," and "the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission will observe as a third-party overseer."
Myra Nanes, spokesperson for the UN Command, criticized, "North Korea has expressed a desire to be treated as a responsible member of the international community, but sending balloons containing filth into neighboring airspace is irresponsible."
The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated the previous day that North Korea's filth balloons "clearly violate international law and seriously threaten the safety of our people," and that "we are closely cooperating with the UN Command."
In response, Kim Yo-jong, North Korea's Deputy Department Director of the Workers' Party, claimed legitimacy in a statement the previous night by asking, "Does 'freedom of expression' and 'international law' depend on the direction in which the balloon flies?" However, the UN Command firmly stated that North Korea's actions violate the Armistice Agreement.
