Signing of a Business Agreement for the Rebirth of the Yeontan Factory Site
Mutual Cooperation System Established between Dongdaemun-gu, National Assembly Member Ahn Gyu-baek, and Samchully E&E
Transforming the Inconvenient 'Yeontan Factory' Facility into One Desired by Residents
Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Ilpyeong Lee) announced on the 27th that it has signed a business agreement for the sale and efficient utilization of the site of the ‘Samcheonri Briquette Factory’ located in Imun-dong, Dongdaemun-gu.
The business agreement was held with the attendance of Ilpyeong Lee, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, Ahn Kyu-baek, member of the National Assembly from the Democratic Party (Seoul Dongdaemun-gu Gap), Kim Doo-yong, Executive Director of Samcheonri E&E, and other related officials.
The ‘Samcheonri Briquette Factory’ is the last remaining briquette factory in Seoul, established in 1968 and has been operating for about 56 years to date. During the heyday of the briquette industry, it was the largest briquette factory in the country, producing about 300,000 briquettes per day and distributing them throughout Seoul.
Although the Samcheonri Briquette Factory has contributed greatly to the development of the local community, including sharing activities for Dongdaemun-gu residents during its long operation, local residents who have suffered from noise and dust generated by the factory have continuously demanded its relocation.
The district office met and persuaded the factory owner and related parties for a long time regarding the relocation and sale of the factory, but relocation was not easy.
In this situation, since his inauguration in July 2022, Ilpyeong Lee, the 8th elected mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, has shown deep interest in the ‘utilization of the Samcheonri Briquette Factory site in Imun-dong’ with the goal of balanced development of Dongdaemun-gu and has made great efforts to resolve the issue.
Starting with the ‘Establishment of a Public Utilization Plan for the Factory Site’ project, ▲ plans to promote the construction of a public complex facility ▲ consultations with Samcheonri E&E officials ▲ and conducting an appraisal service,
based on the appraisal results, after several persuasion and negotiations with the factory owner, in April of this year, the factory owner submitted a letter of intent to sell the site, marking the historic first step toward the long-awaited ‘relocation of the Samcheonri Briquette Factory’ by local residents for 56 years.
Mayor Ilpyeong Lee of Dongdaemun-gu expressed gratitude to Samcheonri E&E for making this significant decision and said, “We will do our best to ensure that this site is reborn as a space that is truly needed by local residents.”
